AFU urges govt to select only genuine farmers in NKGS

Staff reporter

ITANAGAR, JUN 30:

The Arunachal Farmers Union (AFU) on Tuesday appealed the state government to select only genuine farmers as beneficiaries for the Nutritional Kitchen Garden Scheme (NKGS).

Addressing a press conference here today, AFU president Nabam Akam said that the authorities concerned who are currently finalizing beneficiaries for the Nutritional Kitchen Garden scheme should only consider genuine farmers with an adequate plot of land.

Stating that the initiative should not be carried away by political favouritism, Akam said the authorities concerned should verify the beneficiaries and also make field visits for verifications.

Stressing on facilitating marketing of locally produced agriculture and horticulture products, Akam also urged for establishment of cold storage in each districts, and provision for market sheds in appropriate locations to sell local produce.

Akam also sought for organizing awareness campaigns on the modern methods and technology for farming while stating that most of the farmers are still using traditional methods.

The AFU president said that if the farmers are given training and facilities to adopt modern farming then it will not only enhance the benefit of farmers but will also contribute to the state exchequer.

He added that the state government should also come up with new agricultural and horticultural policies for uplifting the marginalized farmers, and its implementation should be backed by proper field verifications.

The AFU has also sought support from the state government to all oil palm growers while informing that due to lack of technical know-how and water sources, many oil palm growers are facing problems.

The union also urged for adequate number of qualified manpower for soil testing and properly equipped labs.

The Union further requested the authorities concerned to not send handicapped officials for field visits, stating that it limits the scope of field visits.
