Cong demands immediate rollback of fuel price hike

Staff reporter

ITANAGAR, JUN 29:

The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday demanded immediate rollback of the repeated and unjust hike in petrol and diesel prices in the country.

Due to repeated and unjust increase in prices as also the central excise duty on petrol and diesel over the last three months of Lockdown has inflicted insurmountable pain and suffering on citizens of India. The country faces unprecedented health and economic pandemic, but Modi-led BJP government is profiteering from the misery of the people by repeated increase in price as also excise duty on petrol and diesel , APCC General Secretary-cum-Spokesperson Meena Toko said in a press briefing here.

The party also submitted a memorandum to the Presidents of India through the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh demanding rollback of the recent fuel price hikes, she informed.

Meena claimed that when BJP assumed power, the excise duty on petrol was Rs 9.20 per litre and Rs.3.46 per litre on diesel. She said, in the last six years, the BJP government has increased the excise duty on petrol by an additional Rs 23.78 per litre and on diesel by an additional Rs 28.37 per litre.

This is a shocking hike of 820 percent in excise duty on diesel and 258 percent increase on petrol , she said, further alleging that the Modi government earned Rs 18,00,000 crore through cess on petrol and diesel alone.

Asking the government to stop profiteering from the repeated fuel price hikes, particularly during the lockdown imposed in the country owing to COVID-19 pandemic, the APCC spokesperson said the government s steps have surpassed all forms of exploitation .

She said, in the last three and half months alone, the Central government has increased and excise duty on diesel by Rs 26.48 per litre and Rs 21.50 per litre on petrol.

The crude oil prices have actually gone down over the last few months. The fuel prices now touching Rs 80 per litre is the biggest proof of the Modi government cheating the people of India , Meena said.

Meanwhile, speaking on the ongoing border stand-off with China in Ladakh, the APCC spokesperson criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving misleading statements on the row.

The Prime Minister in the all-party meeting convened recently to discuss the LAC standoff with China had told that no one had intruded into the Indian Territory.

Inches by inches of Indian land is being occupied by the Chinese Army at Ladakh but our Prime Minister continues to remain silent , Meena said.

She also raised questions over transparency in collection of PM Cares Fund, launched by the Prime Minister himself to tackle COVID-19 in the country.
