2 students killed, 3 injured in wall collapse


Two girl students were crushed to death while two were seriously injured and one suffered minor injury when a hostel wall collapsed on the sleeping children early this morning around 3.15 to 3.20 am at Govt Residential Upper Primary School, Namtsering village under Dudungkhar circle of Lungla Sub-division in Tawang district.

Officials said the wall of the hostel building couldn t resist the landslide that occurred due to incessant rain for last many days.

There were total 19 girl students sleeping in the hostel. Immediate rescue by the warden and other teaching staff along with villagers nearby helped other students to be rescued unhurt.

The unfortunate students who lost their life were identified as Genden Wangmu (10) of Class 6 and Rinchin Lhamu (10) of Class 5.

SP Tawang, ADC Lungla along with SDMO immediately rushed to the spot, while the officials from the Education department and District Administration Tawang also visited and met the family members of children and teachers of the school.

The mortal remains of the two children were sent to Khandro Drowa Tsangmo district hospital Tawang for post mortem, while the injured after first aid at CHC Dudungkhar were referred for further treatment at District Hospital, Tawang.

Heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides hammered several parts of the state in past 72 hours and washed away several dwelling houses, restaurant, bridges, roads.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday had directed the concerned authorities to be in vigil and remain prepared to effectively tackle the disaster that may arise due to the monsoon rains.

He directed the Disaster Management department to issue instructions to all the District Administrations to provide sufficient relief materials, essential ration commodities and basic requirements like drinking water to the flood affected people.

He said that if necessary arises, Defence Sorty would be put into service for air dropping of ration commodities to the areas where surface communication has been disrupted.
