NCST doesn t approve of CAB

SHILLONG, MAY 15:

The National Commission for Schedule Tribe (NCST) has expressed reservations against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) or any bill that allows outsiders to acquire citizenship in the North East. The statement came from the Chairperson of National Commission for Schedule Tribe, Nand Kumar Sai on Wednesday after meeting Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma here at Shillong.

Terming the Citizenship Amendment Bill as a Bill against the interest of the people of the region, Sai said that the Commission would oppose any Bill which seeks to allow outsiders to come to North East and get a Citizenship here. He said that outsiders coming and acquiring citizenship in the region was detrimental to the indigenous populace.

Stating that this should not happen, the NCST chairperson said that the commission did not agree to anything that allows outsiders to come and get citizenship in the North East.

He further said that the commission would play an important role in ensuring that no outsider comes and acquires the citizenship in the North East where people are already concerned about the flow of outsiders.

The NCST delegation also discussed several issues pertaining to the state with the chief minister. (The Shillong Times)
